Compression garbles Japanese file names

When I open a zip file or compress files with Japanese characters, all the file names are garbled. Is there a work-around for this? (I can open and compress without problems in Windows XP on Parallels.)

Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Thank you for the kind response. I didn't phrase this just right. I have no problem with the files I compress. It's when I send them to a Windows user that they are garbled.

And now I just got feedback from someone else. It seems that even when zipped on XP they are getting garbled. Perhaps it's Mail that's causing this...

Hiya,

I wonder whether there is a discrepancy in the input menu / language settings in the machine (as far as OS X is concerned) - see system preferences/ international.

I can only assume, you compress on your OSX, then read (or try to!) on Windows? If that is so, something goes wrong at compression / uncompressing stage.

You might try temporarily putting your Mac into Japanese language (move Japanese to the top of system prefs/international/language, logout/login) and then compressing the files.

I just thought, what compressor are you using? stuffit http://shop.smithmicro.com/v2.0-img/operations/smicro/site/stuffit/nopop/dlxmacUK.html should normally be "zipping" into windows compatible files (and you can adjust the settings to whatever you wish):
Sending smaller "sit" files to Macs and "zip" them for a PC.

I also just discovered that while I can use other katakana, hiragana and kanji in file names, Leopard refuses to allow me to rename files with ン in the name. Perhaps that is what is causing the file names to become corrupt.

Hmmh. may be. I still think it's in the language settings, where the OS installed languages do not tie in with your chosen language preferences.
Short of archive and install (a new copy of Leopard) I would not know how to help any further.

Maybe some else knows a better solution?

Mail's not going to alter the files. It's more than likely Windows' fault.

When I download a zipped file with either Safari or Firefox, all the Japanese file names in the zipped file get garbled. It appears stuffit is working in the background.
