Itunes 5 - iPod mini is not recognised
Similar to many others' findings ... iPod mini working fine on system with WinXP. Updated to Itunes5 and, although Win XP still recognises iPod, Itunes5 does not.
Dialog box with "The software for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please re-install iTunes to reinstall the software." message appears.
Tried all the recommendations, e.g. resetting, re-installing, updating, checking Windows Service etc. to no avail.
Now working again ... this is how ...
0. Backup your music library. Export a library List to file you can find later if you turn out to need it.
1. Use Windows Control Panel > Add or Remove programs to uninstall iPod software and ITunes software.
2. Reboot.
3. Use iPod CD (shipped with device) to install itunes4 and iPod software
4. Reboot
5. Set up iPod (like from scratch) to point to your Music library; then re-sync
6. When asked if you want to upgrade to latest iTunes, reply NO.
7. Wait for Apple to fix iTunes 5
