sending faxes wirelessly from macbook pro

Recently switched old printer on wireless network to new HP printer,scanner, fax combo. Everything works but the fax. When I attempt to fax a document, I get an error message stating that no fax modem is available. When I go to "print and fax" area of system preferences, the driver is present for the printer as well as the fax but there is no fax tab to allow me to view which fax modems are present. There is a Dell PC in my household on the same wireless network-- it can scan, print, and fax. Go figure. How do I get my macbook pro to send faxes over the wireless network?

When you installed the HP software for your all-in-one device, it should have installed a printer named something to effect of "PrinterModel (Fax)".

To send a fax, you select File->Print and from the drop-down menu you select the HP printer with "(Fax)" in the name.

To determine if this fax printer was properly installed, open System Preferences and click on "Print & Fax". Scroll through the installed printers to see if the fax printer is there. If not, re-install the HP software.

sig,

I took her "sending faxes wirelessly" to mean wireless between the computer and the all-in-one device. I have HP all-in-one I access via my local wireless network that I use to fax documents.

You're right that the all-in-one must be connected to a landline, but I don't think she was asking how to send faxes via the internet. I could have misunderstood her message though.

I checked the system preferences-- the fax printer is installed under printers. I open a word document, hit print from file drop down menu and select the fax printer. In order to get to a fax command, I hit page set up. It gives me the choice of faxing the file as a pdf file. I hit that choice and then get an error message that no fax modem can be found. I wonder if my macbook pro needs an internal fax modem to communicate to the all in one printer/scanner/fax.

grwjr,

Well, it appears you have installed the HP software OK, but you are following the wrong procedure to send a fax.

As sig said, make sure you have a phone line connected to the HP all-in-one. Then, follow these steps to fax a document:

-Open the document on on your computer.

-Select File->Print

-From the drop-down menu at the top, next to "Printer" select the fax printer.

-Click the Print button.

That's it. To use your HP all-in-one's fax function, you do not use any of your Mac's built-in fax capability. So, don't bother with any of the built-in fax commands.

A need a phone line in addition to the one that is already attached to the all n one device? If I fax directly from that all in one device, it works fine. My macbook pro is able to communicate wirelessly with the all in one device when it comes to regular printing and scanning. Do I need a fax modem on my mac book pro to communicate wirelessly with the all in one device for faxing?
