Lost video preview when upgarding to 6.05

Just upgraded from OSX10.4 to 10.5 and then had to upgrade FCP from 6.03 to 6.05 to get it to work.

So now I have lost access to my second monitor under View > Video Playback, the usual list of output options is gone and just replaced with the word NONE!

Help.

I had just upgraded my OSX from 10.4 to 10.5 and FCP6.03 would not even launch so I just when to the Apple System menu and "checked for updates" and it donwloaded a new version of FCP with a whole bunch of other software.

Will try your suggestions but it is rater extraordinary that Apple don't check for this kind of thing, I have alos lost access to my Knoll Light Factory 2.5 plugins!

It's next to impossible for apple to check the behavior of updates on every variety of hardware combinations out there. There are established workflows that are important to maintain if you depend on your system to make your livelihood.

That said, You might try deleting your fcp preferences. Try this: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm (thanks StudioX for his post earlier today)

Also, I'm wondering if there might be a compatibility problem with your video card. Check the video card in the system profiler and do some googling and searching here.

And I'm not surprised that you have lost access to a plugin. It's very common that updates cause problems with plugins.

I disagree that it is impossible for Apple to test it on all platforms. That is one of the major selling points of buying a Mac, limited hardware set allowing Apple to keep tight control over software. I bought a standard Mac Pro and I would thus expect Apple to test an Upgrade of FCP to make sure it does not loose such a major feature as my video display!

Anyway, I did what you said, trashed my preferences via the the Pref Man programme and has maid no difference. What is odd is the mac display extends onto the second screen so the OS sees it so why can't FCP 6.0.5?

I used to have an avid. At the time, Avid controlled both the hardware and software (you bought a turnkey system) yet updates would often create problems on some avids yet not on others. Often these problems would be traced to a specific run of a hardware card. And avid charged (if I remember correctly) about $3000 dollars a year for just software updates. I'm not denying it would be nice of updates worked flawlessly, but it's never been that way AFAIK on any system (Avid, FCP, Media 100, Apple, Windows...).

But let's try and solve the problem, rather than argue of things that we'll probably never agree about (as satisfying as that may be).

Try creating a new user account and see if that makes any difference. Try experimenting with the number of colors and resolution for the 2nd monitor in the display preferences.

Hi Michael,

Yes true after 25 years in software development I should know there is no perfect system out there. I just get suckered in by Apples adverts promising a perfect system 😉

Spent sometime scanning the web looking for reports of issues with my Nvidia 7300 card and apart from a lot of reports of how slow it is I can't find anything specific to it.

What is also odd is that even without a second monitor it should give me the option to preview my video on the main Cinema display and even that is gone. I tried altering the second screens size and colour options to no avail.

Just tried logging in as a guest and same problem. Computer has been off and unplugged over night too.

Don't know how to zap p-ram but I do get the feeling we are going down the wrong road here. Feels more like a FCP problem not being able to detect even the main display for video preview. It was over a year ago I set this up so I can't recall what the basic steps where to get this feature working.

I remember seeing this problem once and solving it (but can't remember what I did).

Zapping p-ram. Restart holding down the command-option - p and r keys until the computer restarts 3 or 4 times.

Have you tried playing with the display preferences yet? It's possible that the update has reset the settings for the second monitor to an incompatible setting.

Don't mean this in an insulting way, but it's clear your mac knowledge is very limited. Zapping p-ram is a very basic procedure. I think we should start at the beginning and go over each troubleshooting step to confirm that it is being applied correctly. It is possible that you might need to do a clean install of OS and applications, but I doubt it.

If you're willing, and have skype, I'd be happy to spend some time going over this step by step. Or we can simply continue the thread and review each step.

If you're interested, email me directly. My email is in my profile.

resetting the p-ram is a very innocuous thing to do. It might possibly reset some of your system preferences, but it is a very basic troubleshooting and repair procedure. If you call apple with almost any problem, they'll recommend it. A good way to evaluate the quality of advice you are getting here is by looking at the persons "level" just below their name at the left side of their post. People get higher levels both from the number of their posts AND the quality and usefulness of their posts.
