iPhone in recovery mode & not recognized by PC

Hi all
Hope someone knows something of this problem I have with my iPhone ?
The display shows the USB cable connector & iTunes logo which I presumed meant it was in recovery mode & upon connecting to my PC it says USB device not recognized & also does not show in devices in iTunes 8. Have tried getting into DFU by pressing Power & Home buttons as specified with no success to try to restore to factory default settings.
Any help, suggestions or info most appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Keith

For DFU mode press and hold ONLY the Home button, not both.

But the "not recognized" is the real problem. See this tech note:

Try COMPLETELY uninstalling iTunes ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925?viewlocale=en_US), then download a fresh copy and reinstall.

Have you tried connecting your iPhone to another computer and see if it recognizes the phone? It could be the drivers on your computer became corrupted. You might also want to try connecting other USB devices to your computer and see if they work. If I were you I would try uninstalling iTunes, then restart your computer, then install iTunes and connect your phone.
