Need Help - "USB Device Has Malfunction"

The image above shows the error I am getting when I plug in my iPod. It used to work until I updated the software, now, that error message only pops up every now and then.
It is an iPod Mini, Green. We are using Windows XP and this problem is one that I am worried about.
1. How can I fix this problem?
2. How can I avoid it in the future?
