Backing up data from Performa 630

I have an elderly uncle who has a performa 630 and a 1999 iMac. He needs to back up the data on the 630 but it has no cd writer. What's the most effective way of retrieving the data. As you probably know, the 630 has no USB port.

For smaller files, one way would be to use 1.44 MB floppies. If necessary, the files can be transferred to the iMac, providing that an external USB floppy drive is connected to the latter.

It is also possible to use a modem-to-modem transfer, either via the public telephone network or locally (directly, in principle according to KB article TA21796).

Liam,

Two thoughts to add to Jan's suggestions:

1. If there is email capability on the performa, your uncle could email the files to a computer capable of burning a cd.
2. Remove the hard drive - it's a standard IDE drive - and put it in an external enclosure (USB or firewire) and connect the enclosure to another Mac with the appropriate connectivity and cd burning.

The stock drive on the 630 was 250 megs, if memory serves. So all the files on even a full drive would fit on a single cd.
