3 dots on top left of iPhone?

I just got the iPhone 3G for Christmas, and I was wondering what the 3 dots on the top left, right by the speaker are and why they're there. I don't think they were on the old iPhone right?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

one is a proximity sensor, a wet sensor and a light sensor for the backlight. It was not on the original.
