Is there a way to change the IP-address of my Time Capsule?

Hello,

i want to change the local IP of my Time Capsule. It is currently set to 192.168.8.1 but for my network it has to be set to 192.168.8.254...

Is there a way to do this? I was unable to find a solution for this.

Willkommen Frobnitz!

Changing the IP address of your Time Capsule is easy. Use Airport Utility, select "Internet", then "Configure IPv4" manually, and type in your desired IP address.

I am curious, though, why you need to change it. Changing it will likely also require other changes on your network.

Thanks for the fast answer.

This is my problem, there is no option for "Configure IPv4". Oh, it has an option for IPv6... Is there a way to get an "experts" menu?

To answer your question, my home network is connected to the network of the company i work for. So i can work from home. This requires that the company-router uses the ip xxx.xxx.xxx.1, which is currently occupied by my Time Capsule.

This complicates things. You might have to ask your company for help, since they might have implemented all sorts of protection on its network.

Until then, can you turn off IPv6 in your Time Capsule? From what little I know of IPv6 and Leopard, it seems trying to use it is more trouble than it's worth.

I do not think that my company will change their policies just to make my Time Capsule work 😉 and IPv6 is not even turned on.

But there must be a way to change the local IP...
I even tried editing the config file but with no effect.

Are you using Airport Utility? What do you see under the Summary tab? What appears under Internet?

I use the AirPort Utility.
But it seems that there is truly no option to change the local IP. It is defined when you set the DHCP pool. Looks like a security feature, a user who has no idea what he is doing can not set a local ip that is not within the network defined in the DHCP pool...

Good so far... now click Internet, then click on the Internet Connection tab. That's where you can change DHCP to a fixed IP address that you specify. Can you post a screenshot of that?

Oh, I checked your other screenshots and see you're connected via PPPoE. I also saw you specified a DCHP starting address of x.x.x.200, which I think would have done what you want.

Is there any reason you can't connect via (verbinden über) Ethernet? That permits you to specify the fixed IP address you need. Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with PPPoE to explain why you can't specify a fixed IP address with PPPoE.

The IP address received via PPPoE is temporarily (by my ISP) assigned to the router (eg. the Time Capsule), every 24 hours a new one will be assigned. It is the IP of the WAN side of my network.

Within my network everything works really fine, except that i want to change the LAN-IP of the Time Capsule. But this seems to be set automatically to xxx.xxx.xxx.1 depending on the DHCP settings.
For example, if you chose a DHCP start address like this 192.168.72.100 the Time Machine itself will use the IP 192.168.71.1 without any option for the user to interfere with that. I believe that the only other option is an additional DHCP server that assigns a static address to the Time Capsule.

I'm afraid my lack of familiarity with PPPoE leaves me out of suggestions. The only thing I could think of would be to set up a completely separate network with your Time Capsule. It's also possible you could access your company's network through a bridge, but without knowing how it assigns IP addresses I'm at a loss to explain precisely how to do this.

I suggest you post a new question with PPPoE in the subject; that might attract responses from those more familiar with that protocol. Wish I could be of more help.

Thanks for your help John but i think it's a feature, helping people who are not familiar with the basics of networking.
Now knowing this i can live with it, but i hope that a future update brings an "experts" menu for those of us who know hoe Ethernet works.

When the TC is the "only" router or "intelligent" network device and it is set to do the DHCP and the routing you cannot change the last part of the IP address, it is always set up like this x.x.x.1 .
