576p HDMI output, should be 720p/1080i

I've moved this topic to a new thread to give it full attention, now that another issue has been resolved in the original thread.

I'm having a problem setting up my Apple TV over HDMI to my AV receiver. I just got a new Sony STR-DG820 receiver and I'm trying to hook it up so that all of my inputs go through it to my 24" LCD monitor. The monitor is 1920x1200 resolution, so I've never had problems getting 1080p out of it.

In the past I've always had my tv hooked up to the LCD with an HDMI>DVI cable and then run 2.1 RCA audio out to my regular computer speakers because that was all I had (this set-up is just in my bedroom, so not a dedicated home theatre). Then, the tv gave me plenty of options for displaying, but it was set to 1080i and displayed great.

Now that I've got the new receiver though, I wanted to have the tv run to the receiver over HDMI to send audio to new 5.1 speakers while video still goes out to the LCD. With all this hooked up, it gave me nothing but a black screen when I tested it.

I cycled the tv through resolutions and it turned out that the only resolution offered was 576p/50Hz, which is super strange, as it isn't even a conventional resolution in Canada. As long as I'm set to 576p, I get a picture on the screen, but as soon as I switch back and hook the tv directly to the LCD, I can choose from every other option of resolution, up to 720p or 1080i again

I can't see what settings I might be missing, but it seems to me that if my LCD can handle up to 1080p, and the receiver can handle up to 1080p, then why isn't the tv giving me anything other than 576p as an option?

I've been told to check settings in the receiver, but I really can't find anything there that looks like it'll help. The receiver manual is here: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/STRDG820_EN.pdf Apparently just to drive me insane, the receiver manual says to check settings on my component (the tv), meanwhile the tv manual tells me to check my receiver's settings. Neither seem to offer any actual steps I could take... so if anybody else thinks they can help, that'd be awesome!

In addition to my original suggestion, there is another possibility but you may want to view it as a theory rather than fact as I'm only making it as a suggestion.

Your monitor is not 16:9 it is 16:10 and as such doesn't support regular tv resolutions. HDMI allows the display to tell the source which resolutions it can handle and the source will respond by only making those options available to the user. When connected directly the tv is possibly intelligent enough to know that although the resolutions supported by the monitor whilst not correct for tv are sufficient to allow 1080 playback.

When you introduce the receiver, it's job will be to pass on the information from display to source and it may simply not understand the resolutions being sent from the display and not pass them on.

Some devices can tell the source to work only with some resolutions, these are programmable within the device. This was the basis of my first advice.
