why 8GB ipod nano only gives 7.4GB of free space...

I just bought an ipod nano and when i bring up itunes to sync my music, it only says there is 7.4GB of space when there should obviously be 8. This wouldn't matter much to me, but my library of 1400 won't fit entirely on the ipod. It would if I had the full 8GB like I should... Any reason why the memory space is off by .6GB?

You don't get the full storage, because the iPod requires X amount of space for all of the pre-installed software on the iPod. In this case, it would be .6 gb.

I just rec'd my first iPod and am wondering something similar. It has 16GB and was pre-loaded with a couple of movies, which I promptly lost when I synched it. Totally 'empty', no music or videos loaded or anything, the iPod has 15.4GB out of 16GB available. I am figuring it is because the system files take up the rest of the space. Correct?
