empty set and then a file with a question mark

empty set and then a file with a question mark

When I start up my macbook, right after the apple logo, i get an empty set sign (a circle with a line through it) then i get a flashing file sign with a question mark in it?

Is this a bad sign?

Yes it cannot find your operating system on the hard drive. May mean you have a dead hard drive or ?. If you have a hardware test CD or even the original OS CD/DVD insert and boot holding the C key and run disc utility.
