Ipod Nano (1st gen.) wont respond

My computer crashed to I installed the itunes that was provided with the nano and put it on my laptop (HP Windows XP) but the computer will not recognize it. I tried to charge it via wall charger but it will not work. (I charge it with my docking station) If there is anyone who has the answer please let me know
