copying 25GB file to second HD

I have an iMovie file that I used to create a final cut express video. I am unable to copy, I get error code -1309 and a notification that the copy action cannot be completed. The error occurs about 10GB into the copy action. Thus I am unable to make a backup copy. I have repaired permissions and checked the disk and passed OK. iMovie plays the file thru completely with no apparent interruption, as does the FC-express play OK. Doing a save-as in iMovie with a new name for the file fails. Suggestions for making a backup copy?
