My sister-in-law has an original iPhone that she got for free and it has never been activated. She does not want to use it as a phone because of the fees. My question is can the iPhone be used like an iPod Touch? Can it be used to play music, video and show pictures? Can the software be updated so that it can use apps? If it can be used in this way, where does she need to start? Thanks for your help.

ibook 12, 20g iPod, 5g iPod mini, 2G iPod Shuffle

If this iPhone was purchased used and is no longer activated, she can use the iPhone as an iPod Touch.

With the exception of being able to place an emergency call, none of the iPhone functions work until the iPhone is activated. If this iPhone was purchased new and never activated, she won't be able to use any functions until the iPhone is activated except for being able to place an emergency call.

If the iPhone was previously activated, she can use it as a Touch but it isn't possible to install firmware updates or restore the iPhone with iTunes if needed or wanted. Firmware updates for the iPhone are provided for free, but activation is required in order to complete the firmware installation process and when restoring the iPhone with iTunes which re-installs the current firmware version. iPod Touch owners do not get firmware updates for free - there is a small charge like $10.

The phone is a new phone that was received as a promotion. Maybe I'm confused by the term activation. Does activation mean that she has to go to ATT and pay their fees, or does activation mean that she can connect via iTunes and register the phone with Apple like an iPod? Thanks.

Activation for the iPhone means activation with AT&T.

With the exception of being able to place an emergency call, none of the functions work with a new iPhone until the iPhone is activated with AT&T.
