Not detecting - LG External DVD-RW USB Drive

Hey,

I picked up an LG GP08 "8x Slim Portabable External Super Multi DVD Rewriter" the other day but my 12" Powerbook doesn't seem to want to detect it.

Whilst it did briefly detect it the other day, it ran incredibly slowly, but now doesn't detect it at all.

So, any ideas as to what the problem is?

Cheers,

Pete

Welcome to the Apple discussions.

I believe it's a a USB device? Our PowerBooks don't put out much electrical juice on the USB cable, and typically we see problems with external USB hard drives that won't start or spin up and are not recognized by the system. That may be your issue, especially if the drive is recognized in a non-PowerBook system.

If the USB power is the problem, solutions are to use a USB-powered hub, which plugs into the wall, or use a power supply with the drive (if it supports one), or get a USB cable that has two plugs that can plug into each of the PowerBook USB ports.

Well actually it finally works.
But now i want to upgrade from OS 10.4.11 to Leopard. Thus i bought LEopard. It is version 10.5.4 on a DVD. And i cannot install it : i lauch the installation program. Then the system asks for my id/pwd. No problem so far. Then it reboots. And here is the problem : it is supposed to lauche the install program after rebooting but it does not. It simply launchs OS 10.4.11 ...
Any hint ?
thanks in advance
