Clicking links causes freeze

Hi, When I click a link in an email, I get the spinning wheel, and Mail will not respond.

What version of Mac OS X are you running; surely not 10.4.9? If so, you need to update to 10.4.11 and update your profile so it's accurate.

Have you tried repairing permissions, or creating a new user account and testing for this behavior there? If not, you should do both of those things. And what specific web site was this link supposed to take you to?

sorry to be so sketchy... any link in any email, not specific ones... and i am running 10.4.9, when i tried updating at 10.4.10, i had all kinds of problems, so i went back to 10.4.9, and have been too leery to update since. yes, ran both disk utility and tech tool (it never seems to find anything wrong), to no avail. if i am remembering correctly this problem has happened a couple of times when i click links on web pages too, though i couldn't tell you what they were. the only thing that has happened download wise, that might coincide with it was an adobe flash update (which didn't work anyway). the problem with the email program started yesterday.

Can you define those problems? We've been at 10.4.11 for over 2 years now, so there's no reason you shouldn't have updated by now.

Every link is a specific one; we need details. Part of the problem could very well be your old version of Safari and it not being compatible with the latest versions of Flash and JavaScript. But you can't get a version that does play nice with them unless you update to 10.4.11.

problems updating... i couldn't restart my computer after updating to 10.4.10 and spent quite a few hours on the phone with applecare to resolve the issues. i just haven't wanted to repeat that experience....
sure, every link is specific, but i've got over 6000 messages in my inbox, many with links to webpages, and none of them (that i've tested) work. two specific examples: i get mortgage rate updates from wells fargo, a link from a 10/16 email that worked then doesn't today, an email from a friend with an evite link worked in november, but not now, nor does the link she sent today to update the evite.

If I were you, I'd make a bootable backup of your entire system before you update anything; you should never be flying blind, thinking the worst possible event can't happen to you. It will, and at the worst possible time.

Once you've done that, download and install the 10.4.11 Combo Update PPC (assuming you have a PPC Mac mini). Then use Software Update to bring your system current. Repair Permissions both before and after you do this.

In the meantime, repair permissions on your system, as well as rebuild your Mail index like this:

1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing messages; then check to see if any of those links will work again, without causing Mail to freeze or crash.
