Strange water sounds?!?

I resently heard a sound like water running from my computer. I wa runnug a game so i thougth it might be from a browser running in the background that i forgot to close. So i closed the game and returned to the desk and closed all programs but the sound was still there.

The only thing that worked was restarting the computer. But now it does it again after running a while... can it be some kind of virus? and what to do??

There are no known Mac virus.

Do you have 3rd party audio software installed?

Hello, I am getting the same thing. I have a unibody macbook that I just purchased to replace my 1.83 Intel iMac. I have not moved anything on to this computer yet

I hear a strange water sound as well. It sounds like water lapping against the side of a plastic bucket. I do not have any third party software or audio running, and I can clearly hear this sound. It does not stop or cease even after restarting.

Seriously, what? I am so confused on where this is coming from. Do we have a virus here?

Any help would be appreciated.

To respond to your question. It is definitely coming from my built-in speakers (comes through headphones as well).

Seriously, there are no known viruses for OS X. None. I'd surmise the sounds you're hearing come from your Macbook's intricate cooling system. My 17" Powerbook makes some gurgling noises, but they're very faint.

HI Rasmus,

Do you have any USB or wireless peripherals attached? Keyboard? Printer? MIDI device?

Check your login items: System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items to see if there is any listed there that could be the culprit.

Okay, I am feeling very dumb.

For me, the solution was simple. I couldn't understand why a program would be making noise when I had none of my programs running (as far as I could tell).

Solution: I downloaded several widgets the other day and didn't go through them all. There is one from "TheDashboard: Widget and Gadget Development" http://thedashboard-widgets.blogspot.com/ for an aquarium. For some reason, the audio turned itself on today without me entering dashboard. So I brought up dashboard (F12 for me) and promptly turned it off.

So, I feel pretty dumb for now, but hopefully this will help others in the future.

Heheh. These are always the challenging questions here. Ones where somebody has something or did something it is really hard for us to even conceive. I need to be more out there and be ready to ask questions such as, "Water sound? Are you running any programs that make water sounds? No? Are you positive you haven't downloaded anything that makes water sounds?" 🙂
