Smart Playlist Exclusion Assistance

Hi Kids,

I've recently gone completely berserk over the smart playlist feature and have hit a (relatively minor) snag. I'm careful with genre tags & use groupings for sub-categorizing which has enabled me to make a ton of really cool playlists. What would make them even more cool is if I could exclude certain artists/groupings: this is possible in a "match all" scenario using "artist is not" etc, but for multiple rules that conflict (ie a playlist including more than one genre) I must use "match any." If I add the rule "artist is not Skinny Puppy" the smart playlist is populated with everything in my entire library that is not Skinny Puppy, at which point it's not really a playlist anymore. Any clever suggestions as to how I can exclude something from a "match any rule" smart playlist? Thanks for any help!

Thanks, that makes good sense, although it seems kind of bulky - especially since I've got so many playlists. I wonder if there's a combination of rules within a given playlist that would limit the exclusion to that playlist. Doesn't seem like there is; once the "match any" genie is loose an "exclude" rule would have to have it's own set of conditions that limit it to the playlist itself. Might be a good one for the suggestion box...

There is no combination of rules within a single playlist to mix "or" with "and" statements.

The smartplaylist sadly is either all "and" or all "or" in a single smartplaylist.

The upside is the nested ability that Chris suggests.

The downside is that it requires the creation of many additional playlists.

The other upside is that folders can be used to organize "nested" playlists. Additionally you can use the folder name as a condition under "playlist is x" to decrease the number of conditions you may have in a single playlist.

The only limitation is your imagination and the space you want to fill up with playlists and folders in your source list.

Good luck.
