I can't quite say that I'm suffering with Gmail except one thing: when Mail.app deletes messages it places them in [Gmail]\Deleted Items which is just another label that it creates. Shouldn't it place deleted into Trash that already exists in Gmail?
What I do have a problem with is my Exchange account. It's setup using Mail's exchange wizard, so I guess it's IMAP+some sort of OWA wrapper. For some reason, messages coming from sharepoint to my email just flat don't show up in Mail.app. Not in junk, nowhere. They remain forever in Inbox in OWA (and visible just fine in Entourage). *** is that?
This Just started happening to me, but only with Gmail, not with my MobileMe ( I have had it since .Mac) account.
I check the Gmail on the iPhone, it shows up as read in Gmail's web interface, but not in Mail.app
.Mac/Mobile me works fine.
I wonder if it has to do with differences in IMAP prefixes?
I followed the MacOSX Hints for a beter Gmail experience:
so my inbox prefix is set to IMAP in app, but not on my iPhone (i changed it because if my IMAP prefix was "OMAP" on my iPhone I couldnt see the sent Gmail.)
Has everyone checked differences between their IMAP prefixes on the iPhone and desktop app?
Also, I NEVER had push turned on until 3.0, the only reason i turned it on is to use "Find My iPhone". I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Have others with this problem had push running on the iphone the whole time?
I wanted to add my vote that I'm having problems similar to the ones described here.
I am not using Gmail IMAP, but a different IMAP server.
I've noticed that emails that show up on my iPhone instantly via IMAP don't show up for 5 to 15 minutes later on my laptop over IMAP using Mail.app. Even if I do a "Get Mail", it would appear that Mail.app is checking, and didn't find anything. Then sometime later it just suddenly shows up. It doesn't matter if I have read the email on my iPhone or not
We have 6 macs in our small family business. POP has become a nightmare so I wanted to make the transition to IMAP only to find that it has still got bugs! Apple. . . get your priorities in order. Important=fully functional email. Not so important= the app store pick of the week. . . Monster Pinball or streaming baseball to the iPhone. Perhaps why the business world still considers macs little boy toys.
Hi everyone, I wanted to post an email that I received from my mail hosting provider, Rackspace Email. This seems to have solved my problem (in the limited testing I have done so far). It might solve the problem for Gmail too:
Thanks so much for writing in today! I'd love to help you out with this issue. Thanks for the
update. It sounds like you are running into a known issue with Apple Mail and IDLE. This setting
allows the mail client to stay connected to the server to watch for any new messages, rather than
connecting on a regular basis to do the same. There isn't really a hard fix for this issue,
unfortunately. Here are the steps you can try for a possible fix:
-Turn off IDLE by going to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced and unchecking the IDLE check box.
Then make sure that the scheduled sending and receiving is turned on.
-Alternatively, try leaving IDLE on and turning off scheduled sending and receiving by going to
Preferences > General and changing the "Check for new mail:" option to Manually.
If these do not fix the issue, please let me know so we can troubleshoot further. I would be happy
to set up a time for a remote session with that computer. If you have any additional questions or
comments, feel free to update this ticket or call us any time.
Can some other people try it out on their setups to see what happens?
I am also having similar troubles. I have two Macs, an iPhone (3GS), use Apple mail & MobileMe.
When I get an email to my GMAIL account the read does not synch in Apple Mail. It works on the iPhone. If I delete a message, however, it does delete.
I have tried a bunch of the fixes in these threads, to no avail.
Rebuilding the mailbox or quitting and relaunching mail fixes the issue on both Macs.
The reading sync issue does not appear in Mobile Me or in my AOL account (which is also IMAP). However Mail seems to have a huge delay in getting messages (compared to my iPhone)
I've been using Gmail and mail.app for about 6 months now but I'm not sure I've been using it the correct way.
I've set my settings as recommended by Gmail but am confused whether I should be using the Gmail inbox under the "Inbox" under the Mailboxes category at the top of the left-hand pane in mail.app or the Gmail folder at the bottom of the pane.
I also created folders under the "On My Mac" category because I thought that's how to synchronize with my Gmail labels. Those folders match the labels I use in my Gmail account. However after synchronizing once, they have never synchronized again.
I also have a number of folders under the Gmail folder...should they automatically synchronize with the labels on Gmail's website?
I know I'm not using Mail.app correctly...any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.
I just got an iphone and decided to go all IMAP.
Even after reading more than I can bear about this 'easy' IMAP and Mac Mail setup I still have no solution. I read both links, they are good, but no one seems to say whether the delayed response in marking mail as read (within Mac Mail) has been fixed by following these steps.
Can anyone confirm they used to have this problem and now they don't?
I'm tearing my hair out...

I've just gone over everything once more and I can still confirm, on 10.5.7, that if a message is read in mac mail that comes from gmail IMAP and has label assigned in gmail (interpreted as a 'Folder' by mac mail) - then it ONLY appears read both inside the bottom most Gmail IMAP folder AND the above Inbox after you restart mac mail.
Iphone does not behave like this, and the web based gmail doesn't get confused either.
Is this what everyone else is still seeing or have I somehow done something wrong in my setup?
So you set up gmail as in this article
and still have the same problems?
I was getting ready to try that method but afraid to lose hours and potentially making an annoying situation worse.
