Can I watch anything using the Apple TV?

I am thinking about purchasing a Apple TV, but I am a little confused about what I can do with it.

For example, if I want to watch something on the internet can I use the Apple TV to watch it on my TV?

Or, if I have a DVD that I want to watch, can I open it on my computer, and then play it through my Apple TV?

Or do I have to rent everything from iTunes?

Thank you!!!

rent or buy thru itunes
photos or music within your itunes library will play on ATV
first computer setup with ATV Syncs(transfers files photos, music. movies to ATV...then you don't need the computer once synced but do if you upgrade your files)
DVD if encoded for ATV and placed in your itunes library will play
Stream the files using the next 5 computers.

No, you cannot watch anything from the internet other than You tube, Flickr and the itms trailers and previews.

No, all content must come from itunes.

No, not at all. You can watch anything provided it is in the correct format.
