Network Scanning with a Canon MF4370dn

I purchased a Canon MF4370dn Printer Copier Scanner. I have connected it to the Time Capsule via the network cable (NOT USB) and it works great as a network printer.

However, I can't get it to Scan from. Any suggestions on how to get this to scan in network settings?

I installed this AIO a couple of days ago, with some help from Canon support. If you haven't already, download the three separate drivers from the canon website <http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=124& modelid=17405#DownloadDetailAct> (choose Mac OS X from the drop-down box to see the drivers and manuals). These are the printer driver, the fax driver, and the scanner driver, which all must be installed separately.

The scanner DOES NOT work in Network Mode through the ethernet connection; you must ALSO attach the AIO directly to your Mac via a USB cable. It only scans through the USB connected computer. Scanning leaves much to be desired on this unit, at least with the drivers and software as they currently are. Canon support had me assign a static IP address for the unit for several reasons; once you get the scanner software installed (follow the instructions in the PDF manual that you will need to D/L from the Canon support site; you must choose the USB "printer" when setting up the scanner), you then can only use the Mac's Image Capture application to create scans.

First, you must set the Scan button directly on the unit TWICE to put it into USB scanning mode; then, you've got to launch Image Capture before the machine times out and reverts to the default mode (Copy, unless you've changed that). After Image Capture makes an "overview" (essentially a preview) scan, you can't do anything with it until you click and drag a rectangle around the area that you want scanned (I forgot that just tonight and got really frustrated). Then, you can make changes to color, resolution, file type, etc., and then actually execute a scan. However, if you're used to using Canon's ScanGear software with their standalone scanners, forget it. Image Capture is very limited, but you will be able to scan. Another deficiency is that you can not create a multi-page PDF document via scanning; it only creates one page PDFs at a time. Bummer.

The printer works well, is very fast and relatively quiet, and the duplex printing is worth it.

Let's hope that Canon gets a fix out for the scanner driver, a firmware update, some scanning software like ScanGear, and that it's not a year from now...

Thanks. This helpful. I have 2 PCs networked and the scanning function works great via the Network. I have been frusterated with the apple portion. Now I know why.

Have you had any problems with the network printer losing the drivers and not working? I get it to work for a couple of days and then for some reason it dies. Again, like the scanner, the network printer works great for my PCs but my Mac has been bumpy.

Any suggestions for Network printing?

Thanks

Hi,

Fortunately, I haven't had the Network printing problems that you've described. But then, I just put this printer in a few days ago, so I hope I don't.

What I might recommend is what Canon tech support had me do, which is to assign the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway Address to the printer. Per them, this prevents the printer from having to acquire a new IP Address every time the computer, say, wakes up from sleep, and especially after a power failure. Once you know the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway Address, first write them down. Then, go to the printer and enter Menu 11, click OK, scroll to 3 and click OK, at TCP/IP Settings click OK, at IPv4 Settings click OK, scroll to 2 IP Address and click OK, and then enter the IP Address manually; then go to Subnet Mask and enter it manually, then Gateway Address and enter it manually, then click OK. Then, hit Stop/Reset and you should be back to the default printer mode. Then, you must cycle the machine off/on to keep the settings. You should be good to go after that.

Good luck!

You guys sounds like you're a lot further along in figuring this thing out. I'd appreciate your thoughts on a couple issues I've run across:

No. 1 -- I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with tech support and after much prodding to get the guy to actually talk to someone who actually knows something about Macs, he admitted there is NO WAY to do two-sided printing of a PDF document. First he tried to tell me the software simply doesn't support it. Finally, he admitted it is possible on a PC because there are different drivers available. But he said no such drivers exist for the Mac. I asked him to tell the tech support people to create them... but until then, have you found any way to do two-sided printing of PDF files? I can't make it work in Preview or Adobe. The option is there, but it's grayed out. I can't do two sided printing of an email document, either. I have done it successfully in Word.

No. 2 -- This guy swore to me it's possible to do network scanning. But my image capture software doesn't recognize the Canon's presence on my network. Am I really and truly just out of luck on that? (There's no way for me to connect by USB cable. I'm on a different floor.)

THANKS!

Hi there,

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've just purchased this printer and a time capsule. The time capsule works perfectly, however I can't get the printer to work. The printer is connected to the time capsule via ethernet cable and the computer recognises the device, but it just won't print!

I've tried changing the IP address, subnet mask etc to match that of the computer... didn't work
I've tried connecting the printer via USB instead of ethernet... didn't work
I've downloaded the required driver from the canon support site mentioned... guess what? still not working.

At this stage I don't care about scanning, I just want to print something. anything!

Can somebody out there provide a step by step guide to setup?
