Setup D-Link DIR-655 router help

Greetings,
I'm trying to set up a D-Link Extreme Router (DIR-655) as the wireless router for my home. The setup wizard disc that came with the router doesn't appear to work on a Mac even though it says it's mac compatible on the box. I'm assuming I need to manually install the router which I have no idea how to do. My service provider is comcast and my modem is a scientific atlanta modem. I can connect to the internet by plugging Ethernet directly from the modem into my MBP. If anyone can point me in the right direction from here I'd really appreciate it.

desperately missing wireless,
JC

In the same boat here. I looked at the disc that came with the router and went to the web site, neither referring to hooking up a macintosh with Airport.

On a side note. I understand that people really want to help, but ANY posts that say - look at the disc, google for answers, or read the book, are not helping anyone and should just forget posting. If you do not have any helpful instructions, fact is, _you can't help_. People come here looking for answers, not to be told to look elsewhere.
Thanks.

I have a DIR-615 myself and it works great. Just don't even try to use the D-Link CD or configuration wizards, just do the manual configuration--it's easy. I'd strongly suggest referring to the user manual or the following:

http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=2833&question=dir%2D615+configure

Once you get into the configuration process it will become more clear hopefully.

I have the same router D-Link DIR 655 coming and here is what I am thinking...

The CD is not for use with Mac, but finally on the net somewhere I found the answer to my question about plugging in and then immediately seeing the wireless connection, which I assume would be the case. Here is what I picture -- corrections welcome, as I will be doing this Monday. (I am way too spoiled using my iMac for a 'router' at home.. LOL it baffles the PC users... they can't find the router!)

Unplug the modem from the power supply.
Connect the Ethernet wire from the router to the modem.
Power up the router by plugging it in.
Power up the modem again by plugging it back in.

Now you should be able to see the wifi connection with a wireless laptop.

Type the default address 192.168.0.1 into FireFox and you should be able to skip to the Wireless configuration screen.

I'm trying to read about it as much as I can before it arrives. The thing I will have to do is this is for a business office and I'm not sure if I can also have another wire plugged from a computer into the modem as well as the router...because it makes me think that setup would two IP addresses. (I did this at home for years until the cable company shut me off... said I had to pay extra for 5 connections I was using with my hub!) So that will be a question for me to try to figure out.

Also, set the router on b and g not n, for the older cards, if you don't have the 'n' protocol.

So other than testing what I can do with my connection which is wired into the wall for another port on the opposite side of the room, I think that is how to start.

My first test will be to see if I can have the router connected on the opposite wall (because it will give a better shot for the signal to travel to the other rooms int he office) and have my laptop plugged in at the desk at the same time. The internet worked both from methods (plugged to the modem and plugged to the wall) but that was only one connection each time as I was alone doing this and only had a laptop with me.

Ideally I want the computer to be at the desk, able to plug into the modem, and the router across the way for the others to use on WiFi.

PS - the documentation was useless.. I am getting this info from reading other sources on the web....also be advised that you just plug in and get a WiFi connection I am going to assume it's 'open' and unless you are in a remote area at home, but in a building of other businesses like I am, you will need to password protect the wireless connection immediately.

Thank you MacLady! I found this discussion via Google.

I have cable internet (comcast). I followed the instructions as listed and worked right away.

You will then see an unsecured 'Dlink' wireless network. Go to 192.168.0.1 and use admin and no password to login. Then go to wireless settings and setup a network with your own name and Dlink uses WPA security by default.

No setup CD or any of that junk. That's why I love macs! It just works.

Yes the setup went just as I pictured it would so I'm glad I studied it ahead of time.

Some people with older business modems from Comcast cannot set up from it without having the company do something to it, but this was not the case.

I can use the ports on the modem or the ports on the router if I want to. Some folks still do not have cards in their PC laptops so the router is where we can plug in and plug to the power also.

The setup screen for the 655 is a bit hard to navigate -- it's one of those that you can search forever even when you know what you are looking for but still not find it. So I can imagine a person who isn't already knowing exactly what they are trying to do might be frustrated.

My office has three rooms which extend about 80 feet back and everyone has a 4-bar connection. It's awesome!

I did use pre-shared key, but kept it simple. Hopefully the 'enemies' next door can't break in! 🙂

Did everyone with the 655 or 615 get theirs working?

If you can't just find the connection with the router plugged into your modem, then the modem may need to have a reset from Comcast or your DSL company. Otherwise, it should work from there.

My 655 is plugged into the wall across the room from the modem which is plugged into the network on the wall.
