Speaker crackle/rattle

I am also having the same problem. The right side makes a resonating sound when listening to audio above half volume. My UMBP has been sent into apple twice. The first time they replaced the right speaker and the second time they had it for a week and then said that the sound was normal. Now the mac specialist is going to talk with the engineers after sending links of this post and others with the same problem. Hope they come up with a fix. The rattle is getting old.

This is "good" news, in terms that somebody from Apple is actually going to take a look at it. I myself wanted to take my UMBP for a repair (the same rattling sound from the right speaker), but now that you've presented your story I think I will back off for some time and wait for your update on this one.
Please, post when you know more.

Just a side thought, do you guys have customized UMBPs? Or prebuild ones from the Apple store / retailer? Mine is customized, and I think that this might be the issue here, as the assembly process was poorly done or something like that.

Mine is a prebuilt model. I got word from my mac specialist saying that engineering is looking into another computer with the same problem at this time. I was told they would get back with me.

A question for you then "airplane nut". Did Apple admit that something is indeed wrong with the speaker that was mounted with your UMBP?
I am afraid that I will take mine to an authorized Apple service partner (no apple stores in Denmark) and they will accept the machine just to tell me after a week or two that they find nothing wrong with my UMBP.

Did you show them (prove) what's the issue? I mean did you play them a sound, a youtube video or something like that? Or you just told them that the right speaker rattles?

I have the same issue with my right speaker! I was going to take it in to Apple and try to get a replacement, but it looks like this is a common thing. I have a LOT of software already installed on my machine, so I don't want to go back to Apple and get the same problem with another replacement machine. It sounds like Apple has a real problem here. Maybe a recall coming??

Tets2501, apple has not admitted a problem to me. I did play the sound over the phone for the mac specialist and sent them a video. I recommend everyone with this problem call apple.

Any update anyone?

I took my MBP in to the Apple Store last week. They heard the rattle and decided that the first step would be to replace the speaker to see if it has to do with the speaker cone. They also said both fans were rattling and are replacing those as well. I dropped it off yesterday and will post an update when i get it back.

Apple has left me hanging with no update on the status. I am going to call and email the mac specialist as much as I can.

Please do so... When I had issues with my previous MBP (early 2008), Apple stalled the whole thing for as long as they could. I had to nag them all the time, calling every 2nd day... It brought effect, as I got my cash back eventually and bought the current machine... which has the bloody speaker rattle!! ... depressing.

My wife bought me a new MBP a few days ago. I don't have any speaker rattle, even on max volume. However, I get a loud pop when speakers first come on and the right side is much louder than the left. What could cause that?

I don't have a reference anywhere, but if you google a bit, you will learn that the pop is related to the power management. When the sound card is activated the speakers pop.
The right one is louder as there is a woofer mounted on the right side.

Tets2501, hmmm... thanks much. Did not know that. Also get a screech when attempting to record using Logic Express 8. Perhaps I did something wrong during set up?
