maximum firewire cable length?

Hi there,

Why do firewire cables come at a 6 foot limit? I have a joiner and am able to run my firewire audio device from twice that distance. Will this cause harm?

I guess it should still work: the reason for the cable length limit is probably that the data transfers slightly more slowly when your FireWire cable is longer than six feet.

The limit for a single firewire 400 cable is 14.6 feet. The six foot limit is the most requested so the most sold so the most profit.
