iPod Classic Freezes when NOT plugged in

iPod classic operates fine when plugged in (either to the computer or into the outlet via the charger) but when unplugged freezes up. Have reset multiple times to no avail. This thing is supposed to be portable! Any ideas would be much appreciated.

iPod Classic, Mac OS X (10.4)

I have the same problem, with my ipod (80gb classic) freezing quite alot), I did some research and the solution is to hold both the menu button and the middle button down together, untill the screen goes black and restarts with the apple logo. It should be fine after this. Spread the word, this was too hard to find out (it's frozen like 4 or 5 times now and I only just discovered this) - http://www.topix.com/forum/gadgets/ipod/TFCD7RF74RF71UUJ5

Thanks, but I have reset the iPod (both by the method of holding the menu and center button) as well as through iTunes) multiple times without improving the situation.

Can anyone think of something else to try?

i was curious, did you solve it? i have the exact same problem, it only works if plugged, but the minute i unplug it, it freezes back.
maybe it has do to with the battery?
