Adding another monitor to the Macbook

I would like to attach a separate monitor to the Macbook for use at home. I have an old but relatively good 20" Dell color monitor and I bought the mimi display port to VGA adapter. I can't seem to figure out how to configure the Macbook to have two monitors. When I click on the display icon in system preferences, I don't see any way to add another monitor.

Can someone point me to the appropriate information?

Thanks.

as in you want to dual screen?
Go to system pref... then displays...go ahead and plug in your dell and wait for the screens to adjust.
They should turn blue and back to normal. Then go to arrangement.
Mirror or unbox it to dual screen. You can also move the other monitor to where ever you like. For example if your macs on the left of the dell then just move the dell monitor square the right. Hope that works.

I just got the mini display dvi then got dvi---->to hdmi
best thing ever....go the samsung 52"lcd dual screened.
Game On.
