Powerbook G4 Battery Issue

I've seen some other topics posted about this by I'm its all overwhelming so I thought I'd post my own to see if I can good answer.

I have a PowerBook G4 (1.2), 1.5 GHz. I bought it back in May 2003 and I've had very few issues with it these based 5.5 years. I was not part of the group that had the battery recall, and this is the original battery. It seems to have a good life - until now. I let it drain all the way while home (forgot my cord) and I plugged it in to charge today. I left it off for a few hours to charge and then turned it on. Come to find out that it will only work with the power adaptor. It says the battery has 0% and "The Battery is not charging" when I look at the power options. It also takes a few times flickering on and off when waking up from sleep (I'm guessing because it's trying to go in between the power options).

The system profiler gives me this information:

Battery Information:
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 0
Charging: No
Full charge capacity (mAh): 3580
Health Information:
Cycle count: 0
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 10157

AC Charger Information:
AC Charger (Watts): 65
Connected: Yes
Charging: No

I've tried to reset the power manager by doing the whole "hold down the power button for 10 seconds" and also the "hold down option command+PR" while restarting and neither worked. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do besides buy a new battery?

My guess is it is just the battery. The voltage should be much closer to 12v (12000 mV) and I suspect your 10.157 is considered too low and defective by the computer to initiate charging. The data is also corrupted or something, as 0 cycles is not believable, nor really is the capacity of 3580 which is pretty good (new is about 4500).

If a cheapskate, borrow a battery to test.

golfan: If your battery is the one that originally came with your Powerbook, and resetting the Power Manager hasn't made any difference in the implausible and erroneous information being reported about the battery, it's definitely due for replacement. If there's any other hardware problem, it will be easier to diagnose once you have a good battery.

For future posts, you should probably clarify the identification of your Powerbook and/or double-check your purchase date. No 1.5GHz Powerbook existed before April of 2004, and I'm not sure what the "(1.2)" in your post refers to. "About this Mac" in the Apple menu will tell you the basics that are most useful to folks who may try to help you here.

Let us know how things go when you get another battery.
