iPod touch 2G stuck on white screen

I can't get it to go back to the home screen. It has a white screen on the display, but the home button does not work. When I push the on/off button with the home button, it makes the sound of a camera shutter taking a photo. How do I get my Touch out of this mode??? Thanks in advance...
