Yahoo mail problems - only displaying OLD mail, and not much even of that!!

I bought a new iPhone yesterday and immediately set up the mail program to use my Yahoo account, but it isn't working correctly. The most recent messages in my inbox are from several months ago, and it only shows a few of them! I happen to have about 700 unread messages in my inbox right now (I realize this is ridiculous, but it's the nature of my procrastination!), some of them going back way earlier than the messages I am able to see, many going further forward. When I set up the mail program it showed eight unread messages, with an option of viewing about 50. I had to scroll through all of these in order for the program to stop showing eight unread. Now it shows NO unread messages, although as I mentioned there are hundreds, and still shows my most recent message as being from some time in October.

Can someone suggest a reason for this problem? It's very frustrating to be unable to check my mail with my new iPhone!

Thanks for your help...

Is this a free account, or a Yahoo Mail plus or paid account?

Did you create the account with the iPhone's mail client using the Yahoo account preset?

Doing so creates the account as an IMAP account and all messages in the account's Inbox mailbox should be available.

If a Yahoo Mail plus or paid account, are you also accessing the account as a POP account with an email client on your computer such as with the Mail.app on your Mac?

You're welcome.

Not sure why all messages in the account's Inbox mailbox on the server are not available and marked as unread of not read.

The iPhone's mail client includes a setting for showing the most recent messages with 200 being the max - if a mailbox has more than 200 messages, there is a load more messages selection at the bottom of the mailbox below the 200th most recent message, but this should not prevent all messages in the account's Inbox mailbox on the server being available to the account's Inbox mailbox with the iPhone's mail client.

With a Yahoo account using the Yahoo account preset to create the account, you can access the account's Inbox mailbox via Push - which doesn't require checking the incoming mail server for new messages automatically or manually. Do you have Push access enabled for the account? If so, try turning Push access off to see if this makes any difference.

If not, try deleting and recreating the account and don't enable Push access. If on after recreating the account, turn Push access off.

I deleted the account and set it up again, this time showing 75 messages, but still no luck. The most recent message is from October 19th! I also can't figure out where to enable OR disable the "Push" feature you mentioned. I know my way around my MacBook pretty well, but options for really getting into all the settings on the iPhone seem rather limited, or are at least still pretty confusing to me.

I am a Yahoo! Mail user (free version) and I just started experiencing this same problem this evening (1/8/09). The last message my Yahoo! account on my iPhone shows is from 12/3/08. I've received at least a couple hundred emails since then but they do not appear there. Yes, they are there in my account when I log in on a PC, but not on my phone. Messages sent as well do not appear on the phone (in the sent folder or inbox), but when sent to other email address, are received. I use many folders as well, and a number of these folders which contain recent emails, are also missing messages. This is terribly frustrating for me as I use my iPhone frequently to send and receive messages.

The odd thing is that I had a completely non related issue occur that required me contacting Yahoo! for service. Immediately after ending the chat session with Yahoo! I started experiencing this problem. I use two Yahoo! accounts on my iPhone. It is only this one that is experiencing this problem. The other is fine. I have reason to believe this is not a hardware issue but yet a problem with Yahoo!.

It was recommended by Yahoo! that I submit a form to their mobile department in order to get this problem solved. I submitted this problem to their mobile department just a couple hours ago. When and if I hear anything I will reply with relevant information.

Please do the same.

Thank you,

Kurt

note: I have attempted deleting and reentering account information, hard reset, sync, restore and sync all to no avail.
