IPhone 3G will not send text, getting "error sending message"

I recently upgraded my IPhone 3G to 2.2 and about a week later I was getting a "error sending message" when sending text messages. I can receive text just fine. I have tried restoring using ITunes and even had the ATT store tech swap the SIM card with no results. HELP!!!!!!! I am very upset with ATT and Appple. I know other folks out there are having the same problems and someone out there has a fix.

Update!!!!
I finally called apple tech support and this is a issue with allot of phones. They had me change my text server numbers several times, even tried to restore the phone with a different user name using ITunes. NO LUCK. I am upset as everyone out there with the same problem.

ATT was no help and steered me to an apple store genius bar this thursday which I am feeling is going to be a total waste of my time. I am a business owner and I depend on my text message functions. I feel ATT is ripping me off by charging me for a service that is useless on this phone at the moment. I have wasted several hours of my time trying to get this issue resolved with no luck.

Why are they not addressing this issue with a higher priority? I go to my local ATT store and the folks say they have heard of this issue which I find HARD TO BELIVE because most of my friends have the same problem. My 3G has been a great tool up to this point, now I wish I had my blackberry back, at least the text functions worked. Oh well!!!!

im also having the same problems,
this is completely ridiculous. I can't believe the so called "amazing" iPhone 3G cant even send a simple text message!!

I tried going to the apple genius bar, and they couldnt fix it. all they did awas check the diagnostics of the phone and sent me home DISSAPPOINTED.

u know what i did?

i sold my 3G iphone for cheap price, and bought the ORIGINAL iPhone.
to my surprise, the phone ran excellent using the new 2.2 firmware.

it seems like the 3G is just a piece of garbage, not worth the trade off for the faster speeds if it cant even send a simple text message!!

maybe you just have to change the message center,,,

there is a way to do it on the iPhone by manually entering the GSM code

I did it when I was in lebanon and it worked,,,

the GSM code starts with a *# or something like that,, I forgot what it was but it saved me, than you have to enter the code and then the phone number for the message center

I try this method, doesn't work.

Before you start you need to know the SMS service centre number of your operator. Find that out.

Step 1 - Checking what number is set as your SMS service centre number

Launch your iPhone keypad and type -

#50057672#
Press Call

You will get a response that tells you the number that has been set as your SMS service centre number. In all probability, that number is missing a digit or is wrong.

Step 2 - Erasing the incorrect SMS service centre number

On your iPhone keypad, type -

##5005*7672#
Press Call

You will get a response that tells you that the service centre has no address or something to that effect. It means it has been erased.

Step 3 - Setting the correct the SMS service centre number

On your iPhone keypad, type -

*5005*7672+nnnnnnnnn#
Press Call

Note - nnnnnnn is the number of the SMS service centre number that you need to find out in the first place.

You should get a response telling you the number has been set. If the response says No Address, you can use Step 1 to check the number.

Thanks for the info. I went to the apple store, and the guy there tried that. He had to call AT&T to get the right number. Unfortunatly, my phone was not accepting the change. It would give him some error.
He ended up replacing the phone, and that took care of the issue. I guess for some reason the smsc number gets messed up, and the phone is not allowing it to be changed. I hope it doesn't crop up again.

Hi everyone, just let you know that Apple told me,

"Apple has received reports of the symptom you describe and is currently investigating. Keep your software up to date using Software Update and iTunes. You may also want to check the knowledge base from time to time for possible updates about this issue."

Other then that at this time i don't have any other info to go off of yet but it sounds like they are working on a update to fix this issue."

Hi, I am a iPhone's user in Japan (softbank carrier). Since yesterday (Jan. 19, 08) I got the same issue as mentioned above (error sending message). Then, today, I went to softbank mobile phone shop to ask help from them. They ask me try to restore, reset. After all did, nothing changed. They send me home by telling me to wait few days to let them check adn find solution. However, they do not know when they can find the solution.
I also tried the method you mentioned above, but nothing worked.
I posted my message here. Hope anyone knows the solution.

Thank in advanced!

My phone started doing this 4 days ago. I did all the busy work of restoring it and all that good stuff. Paid off cause when I called apple they took my word on it and we were able to skip all those steps. Apple transferred me to AT&T where we spent 2 hours checking to make sure my account was fine. I now have to get a new sim card (which I don't think will work) tomorrow before Apple will do anything more. If the new SIM doesn't work then I have to call apple back were they will put me on with a tier 2 technician. If they can't fix it then I hope they just let me trade my phone in. I spent 3 hours on the phone today playing hot potato with Apple and AT&T but if it gets fixed in the end than it's worth it.

Hi from Switzerland.

I've got exactly the same problem. I tried to get help from Orange team - the official swiss mobile carrier (they told me they were looking at it but didn't have fix anything right now). I also tried to restore....nothing !
The funniest is that the problem appeared on January 10, day of my birthday. What a special gift.
Hope that someone can fix this problem...
