Something similar happened to me. Do you have a firewall enabled? Make sure BonJour Service is configured to access the internet. Also check to make sure iTunes itself is configured to access the internet. You may have to do this manually.
I had this problem only on Zone Alarm, I should add. On another security suite, iTunes was automatically configured properly.
