two types of backup

Question

two types of backup

i have a Macbook Leopard installed and using a WD External for Time Machine... Can i use this drive to backup other stuff on a non-Leopard G5 Powermac? If so, i can i after use on the Macbook the stuff i've backup on G5

Powermac G5 dual 1,8Ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.11), MacBook Intel 2Ghz Core Duo with 2GB RAM MacOSX 10.5.6

If your MacBook has Firewire, and you put your G5 in Target Disk Mode, you can add the G5 as a volume to be backed up by Time Machine.

If your MacBook has no Firewire, no such luck as far as I know.

i only want to put on disk some files from G5
is it possible to use the drive for TM on one computer and the same drive for backup on another computer?
and then having access to that data on the one i use TM?

It is probably most possible if there are two partitions on one drive.

A partition at least allows data to be stored securely away from one partition to another as secure as two separate drives are unless of course the entire drive fails.

There is no problem about doing this: a disk used for TM can carry other files perfectly well, it's just that TM will expand as time goes on and eventually fill the disk. This is why there is something to be said for partitioning the drive.

Obviously you have to plug the drive into either on or other computer, I assume that's what you mean: you can't connect a drive to two computers at once.
