17-inch hinges

So how are the hinges? I'm surprised no journalist at MacWorld tested that. There are 2 machines there and it would be an easy test...

Anyone out there trying it out?

If it works well on the 17-inch, then I'm getting one. I don't want the 15" with the junk hinges. See www.fixthehinge.com

I sure won't this time around. I had the 15" unibody (public beta). It sure is a deal breaker. So I learned my lessons living on the bleeding edge.

But I'm really curious, and the pre-prod machine could give an indication. If the hinges are good on the preprod, they should be good on the prod machine, if they are bad...well...they might be fixed before production. But reading the hinge issue thread for the 15" wouldn't make me optimistic.

BTW, all 15" unibody have this issue, but not everyone is bothered by it since majority of users use their laptop as a desktop. It's a desktop laptop, not a lap laptop. They used the same mechanism on MB and MBP. It works well on the MB but not on the MBP because of the heavier screen. Apple has too little incentive to fix this on the 15". But for the 17" they must have used a different mechanism, since the screen is even heavier, also this has been an issue for the old (current) 17" versions. So I'm hopeful with regards to a forced construction change. I can't imagine they could use the same exact hinge on the 17" as well.

Still no one out there with first hand info from touching those things at MW?

Paul, I was seriously considering selling my 15" and getting the new 17" based on the hinge was perfect. Thanks for letting me know it's not perfect like the little 13" Macbook. I really don't want to "downgrade" to a 13". It would bother me having an entry model inexpensive notebook... I will stay with the 15" pro because i don't want to live with just a Macbook. If it was a 13" Macbook Pro it wouldn't be a problem.

Alright. I had never tried using the machine in bed before and I thought I should make an informed comment.

So, right now I am lying down in bed, with my knees raised to what I'd say is approximately 75º off the horizontal, and my MBP propped up against my knees, resting on my hips. The screen is tilted past 90º (probably to around 110º) to facilitate proper viewing angle. The screen on my MBP does not fall down in this position at all, and I can type comfortably. If I reduce the angle on the screen so that the angle between the screen and lower case is 90º it still does not fall. In fact, the screen does not fall closed at any angle. It stays exactly where I put it.

I'm not sure what the problem is. People in this thread have been claiming that this issue affects every 15" unibody Macbook Pro that has ever been made. My unit is one of the first to be manufactured; it is a week 42 if I remember correctly and it does not exhibit the same problem.
