had a shuffle, used in gym no problem - jogging, weights and skipping. Upgraded to mini for extra capacity and have not looked back. although I didn't really go to mini for a screen, having it is just so useful - play lists etc... As for robustness - I am able to use in the gym same exercises, walking, skipping and weights with no loss of performance. Go for mini - worth the little extra.....

If I had to pick between the iPod mini or the Shuffle I'd definitely go for the mini. I can't see myself having an MP3 player without a screen where I can see what I want to play. Shuffle wouldn't do it for me. I've seen a couple of people with it and I guess it works for them. It could never do for me. On the other hand, Shuffle is very light which probably could be used to jog, work out and stuff since the music doesn't skip (not that it does in the mini but there are less chances of that happening because of how small the Shuffle is). Also, the only color I've seen the Shuffle in is white, iPod mini comes in nice colors - pink, silver, blue..etc (mine is blue).
Hope this post helps you along with everyone else's.
