Different sound levels on same sound clip

Hi everyone.

During a scene in a iMovie project I'm doing, there's a background song. I'd like to reduce the volume sound of the song just for a few seconds so a person that is talking can be heard.
When I change the sound mix between movie background sound and the song, it affects the whole song. Is there any way to change the sound levels of the same track for a few seconds?

Thank you all.

Select the portion of the clip that you want to change the volume on. When you have done this, there should be a "yellow rubber band" around this portion of the clip. Now right-click/Split Clip (or Edit/Split Clip. Now select that clip for which you want to reduce the song (it is now a separate clip in the project). Click on the Audio icon in the clip. Select Ducking.

It's counterintuitive, but iMovie '08 needs you to make the change to the clip you want to promote, not the clip you want to duck, which in this case is the video clip where the person is talking. Once you get the hang of that, it actually works really well.

First, if the talking is part of one big clip, select the piece of it that has the talking and choose Edit -> Split Clip.

Next, select the video clip you split out and click on the speaker button in the middle toolbar. A floating audio adjustments window pops up. In that window, you can select a box that says "Reduce the volume of other tracks to:". Check the box and adjust the slider under it accordingly.

Once that is done, iMovie will reduce the volume of the music track just for that part of your project. Hope this helps!
