I've had my IMAP gmail account set up in mail.app for a few months. At first, it worked perfectly -- the two would sync up relatively quickly, both in terms of labeling/deleting email, and noting whether they were read or unread. About a week ago, mail.app started synching right after I would open it -- and then it would eventually label/delete email correctly, but would not change an unread message to read if I left it in my gmail inbox. Now, it isn't even labeling/deleting email -- it won't do anything except right after it is first opened. Manually telling it to synchronize has no effect -- the little clock icon in the account list doesn't even appear. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the 10.5.6 update -- after which, I did run the stand alone Mail update, hoping it would resolve this behavior (even though I wasn't having stability problems) -- but it didn't. Any ideas?
Any updates on this prob? Mines been doing this exact thing before 10.5.6, so I don't think its always related... Perhaps a setting in the gmail web interface???
hey guys,
it's reassuring in a bad way to know its not just my Mail that lost the will to sync since about a month ago...
same story as everyone, iMap was working great between my iPhone and Mail, no problems, then one day i noticed it wasn't syncing my read messages, and still isn't!
i haven't seen any solutions despite looking around a fair bit, right now it says i have 11 new messages, all of which were read on my iPhone and when logged into Gmail.com are marked as read. Mail looks like its being left out of the fun 😟
If i see anything useful I'll post it, please keep looking tho..
I have the same problem here. Have been having it for over a year now, remember having it in Tiger's Mail, too. I believe the problem lies with Mail.app since a restart of the program fixes the problem until the next email drops in.
Isn't there at least a quick fix in wait for Apple to do something about this?
I have found out 2 things (at least with my mac and iphone)
1. This is not a mail.app only problem, I downloaded Thunderbird and still would have items shown as not read even after i read them on my iphone.
2. I set up a mobile me trial and everything works perfectly...its almost instant. If i receive an email it shows up on both mail.app and iphone mail. If i read it on my phone it shows as being read almost instantly on my mac.
So IMO its a problem with gmail not allowing mail to constantly update unless a whole new request is initiated ie: restarting the application.
Unfortunately I cannot figure out a fix, but i hope this helps!!!
I was having the same issue and seem to have fixed it, in the preferences in mail.app I went to the advanced pane for my gmail account. I unchecked the "enable this account" box. once gmail cleared out, I then went back and re-enabled with the same check box. now everything is working great between iPhone, mail gmail, they sync pretty much instantly.
Interesting. Unfortunately this doesn't work here. Could you try this?
1. Send an email to yourself
2. Retrieve it in both Mail.app and on another location (e.g. iPhone)
3. Read it on the other location, so it gets marked as read
What happens now in Mail.app? Does it automatically update to not-new? Do you need to click 'Get mail'? Here it just stays marked as new/unread, until I restart Mail.app.
Anyway, this is all very annoying. "Good" to read that there are others with the same problem. It seems to me that it's "as simpel" as changing the way Mail.app retrieves its information. If it works on the iPhone (mark as read in Mail.app, refresh iPhone mail, and it's also marked as read there), why not in Mail.app? I get the feeling it only looks for new mail, and nothing else.
EDIT: It's also not working the other way around. Mark an existing message in Mail.app as unread, and refresh your iPhone mail. No change. In Gmail's webinterface the message does get marked as new, so the status change gets processed.. just not updated in the iPhone client. Blech.
I've been having this issue since before 10.5.5. Really annoying. I leave Mail running on two machines 24/7 and the Read flags aren't in sync with each other. I'd love to see this resolved.
I too am having this problem and I'd like to chirp in with some more details of this behavior that I notice. When I read an email on the gmail website I see the read status get quickly updated in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Mail 3.5 but not in the inbox. The inbox read status doesn't get updated until a restart of Mail.
This clearly suggests a bug in Mail.app since it sees the correct read status in the IMAP folders, it just doesn't transfer that status to the inbox.
I have the same symptoms here. Restart mail and it works fine with Gmail but I can't leave it up for an extended period of time. It's a pian, and I wish that Mail.app could be fixed to make this work. Anyhow, maybe it is time to try t-bird, or back to gmail web.
Hi all,
I'm having some problems with my gmail imap account. Mail will not automatically retrieve my gmail messages like it used to. The only way I can see my messages is if i open the Mail app and wait for the servers to sync. I have always had it set to check for new mail every minute and it used to alert me whether i had the app open or not and display the unread message count in the mail icon front row. Ive tried deleting the account and then setting it up again and its still happening. Is anyone else having this problem? should i just give up and try thunderbird?
