Song is listed twice on iTunes display, but only one copy on hard drive

All of my music is in an iTunes folder with only one copy of the song. However, on my iTunes display, each song is listed twice (both showing the same location). This makes listening to CDs hard unless you want to hear each song twice.

Any ideas? I have the entire library on an external hard drive.

Thanks Stillgrass and Karmaking, but I'm still not there.

I have not converted the format to mp4 or anything else.

However, I did re-import the library when I transferred it from an internal hard drive to an external hard drive. If I follow karmaking's suggestion and delete an item from one library, it deletes it from both libraries since they both are connected to the only copy of the song I have in the folder.

HI, when you delete an item from the iTunes main window, you should first be asked "do you want to delete this from the library" and then, you should be asked a second question "do you want to delete from the hard drive" (or similar such words).

Are you not asked these questions? You should be able to delete any item as listed from your library and have it still remain in its physical hard drive location.

I am just trying to gather some more information at this point.
