Sync iTunes playlists to iPhone & Manually add songs from other machines?

I sync playlists from my desktop iTunes to the iPhone. But when I'm abroad I want to be able to manually add songs from the laptop w/out losing what was sync'd from the desktop. How is this possible?

Now, if I can just find the preference for Auto-Make Cup of Coffee How I Like It, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

You cannot sync on one and manually manage on another.
Just set to to Manually manage and you can use that on all computers.

Unless things have changed recently, you cannot sync an iPhone to more than one iTunes library for music, videos and movies even if you use manual management.
