Version Update from 1.1.1 to 2.2

Hi, I am new to updating Versions and I have never Updated my Ipod Touch Since the 1st version update. Here are my questions.

1. Is it possible to update my itouch even if it is version 1.1.1?

2.Do I need to go to itunes and have my ipod connected when dowloading the latest version? Is possible to download the software update even if the ipod is not connected?

3.Does the latest version allows the user to download documents(pdf/spreeadsheet/word docs) and save it to his Ipod and access it later even if his not using wifi?

Your response sill be highly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Johnvic
