Keyboard is going crazy

A few days ago I started to notice that when I was typing my keyboard would go haywire and sometimes i would be typing in the middle of other words, other boxes or it would stop typing and refresh the page. I know I had edited some of my preferences on my computer about a week ago and since then it has been malfunctioning, does anyone know what this could be caused from and how to fix it so I can save myself a trip from the Apple store.
Thank you for your help.

It was in the System Preferences. I can't remember exactly what I hit because I was kind of just futzing around, which I won't ever do again. But I was trying to see if there was a way I could possibly reset my System Preferences?
I'm a college student so I need my computer for a lot of my classes and schoolwork, therefore I really want to avoid having to bring my laptop in if I can solve this myself.

Hmm. Not sure exactly what you tweaked, but try going into System Preferences and clicking Keyboard and Mouse. Under Keyboard shortcuts, hit Restore Defaults.

Is the text being typed random letters and numbers, or are you hitting the keys and the characters are just appearing in the wrong place?

It's almost like the cursor will dissappear and then I will continue typing what I was already typing except in a different spot. Sometimes it will stop typing and highlight things, refresh the page, or backspace an entire sentence.
I tried resetting to default settings but its actually worse going haywire.

Hi,

I am having almost the EXACT same problem. I checked my trackpad settings to make sure it "ignored accidental input" and that box is already checked. And yes, I am absolutely sure I'm not touching my trackpad while I'm typing.

But yeah, I'll be typing and then completely out of the blue, one of these things will happen:
1. all of my text will be erased
2. SOME of my text will be erased
3. my cursor will jump to another completely random spot in my text and continue typing
4. it will just refuse to type a word. Say, for instance, I try to type "continue", but in the midst of my typing, my cursor will jump back and it will type "contiuen". So of course I'll erase it and try again, but it will STILL type "contiuen" instead of "continue"! Then finally after about 5 tries it'll type the word I've been trying to type.

This will happen totally randomly. It'll be completely fine and then suddenly freak out for about 5-10 minutes and then be fine again!

Anyone have an answer for me?

i know it sounds stupid, but are you sure your not just touching the trackpad with the palm of your hand when typing? when i had my macbook i had that problem and by running my hand accidentally over the pad it wud think i clicked and wud take the focus off the box i was typing in.

my keyboard has also started being funny lately, ill type hello and occasionally it may go helllllllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo or something like that all on its own which is a pain.

I'm having the EXACT issue - it just started doing this in the last day or two. I also thought I was brushing the track pad with the palm of my hand but I'm not - I'm ready to toss this thing out the window! I'm not able to do any work as so much of it depends on these **** computers. If I didn't know any better it almost acts like a virus. My "ignore accidental trackpad input" button is already checked too. Help!

I'm not a big trackpad fan and I used to have the same problem. Went to a mouse operation WITH

ignore accidental trackpad checked AND

ignore trackpad when mouse is present checked.

With this setup, IF my mouse is NOT plugged in, the trackpad still works. However, I have to admit that my operations is 99% mouse on.

While it doesn't apply here, I just bought an Acer Netbook. On that unit, I can adjust the sensitivity on the trackpad. I have it set for "heavy" touch and almost never get an accidental mouse movement from the trackpad. Wish Apple had this option.

Mine does the SAME thing. I was problem free up until about a month ago when I notice the tap-to-click will randomly stop working.

NOW after installing iLife 09 the keyboard will stop working and/or goes nuts and typesssssssssssssss <----like this.

What's odd is that some times closing the monitor and opening it again will solve it. But 9x out of 10 I have to restart.

I've called Applecare twice and they have me go through the normal steps. They said next thing to try will be an Archive and Install. I've read that those with this trouble...this has NOT worked for them.

If I figure out how to solve this I'll post it on the forum. There seems to be a LOT of people with this issue!
