HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N with no DVD+/-R DL

I have the late 2008 macbook 2.0 ghz base model which came with the LG HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N optical drive.

The website + box state that the drive supports dvd+/-r dl , however, when i click about this mac and more info all i get is:

Firmware Revision: SA15
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 0 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

No mention of dual layer disks at all.

I haven't inserted a dual layer disk, but was looking into buying some to burn using toast.

Will this 'about my mac' page sort of, 'update', if you will when it gets a new type of disk that it recognises or does my macbook not offer me any dual layer support?

I've googled and searched everywhere and noone else seems to be having this problem so i must be making a silly mistake somewhere....

I have the same macbook and your supposed to see this:

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N:

Firmware Revision: SA15
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

All i can tell you is make sure all your software is up-to-date and try burning a DL disk. If it works great if not get it checked out.

Hi - sounds like we have the same macbook - I had a similar problem - the display was different that what the box it came in said.

Don't know what happened - I came home from work today, burned a dual layer +r DVD (successfully this time), was about to phone apple, checked the info and voila!

The info displayed was now the same as what was on the box, but different from the info displayed yesterday.

Weird eh?

BTW - I used memorex dual layer DVD and could not burn - stopped at the final stages - switched to maxcell as recommendation of the apple vendor and it worked just fine.

Ok, problem solved.

With the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N LG drive i had to put in a dual layer disk for the 'About This Mac' disc burning section to update itself and tell me that i can burn dl discs.

However, i exchanged my 2.0 macbook with the LG drive for a 2.4 today.

The 2.4 has the Matshita drive and in the 'About This Mac' disc burning section it came out of the box with dl support listed, like it should be.

Thanks all.
