How to use the back mouse button to go back in folders?

Is there a way to configure the "back-button" of a mouse so that I can go back the same way in folders as in Safari?

Thanks!

Hi Macindows, I was just searching for a solution to the problem that you are having and after solving it I felt compelled to share with you the simple solution. You need to enter the key stroke that the finder uses in common with your web browser, so here it is. Usually on your mouse in Steermouse the buttons are called 4 and 5 for back and forward as we think of the buttons.

So in Button 4 (back button) you want to, from the drop down menu, select "Input Shortcut Key" and check the ⌘ box and then type [

This will look like cmd + [ in the middle window. Then click ok.

Then in Button 5 (forward button) you want to, from the drop down menu, select "Input Shortcut Key" and check the ⌘ box and then type ]

This will look like cmd + ] in the middle window. Then click ok.

I realize this is totally non-obvious as there was no instruction that came with Steermouse but this did it for me! Have a great day.

To use the wheel's left and right clicks or to use any other similar buttons you need to program them to send COMMAND-[ and COMMAND-]. The first is page back and the second is page forward. The commands work in both Safari and Finder. In SteerMouse's button programmer simply place the cursor over the image of a mouse, then click the buttons you want to use. The programming fields will darken so you know which ones to use. Click on the field button to start programming it, then select the option to input a shortcut key. Check the box for COMMAND and press the appropriate key on the keyboard - [ and ]. Each button must be programmed separately..

Hi Kappy,
Thanks again for your reply. Most probably I'm just too stupid but I really don't get it to work.

So I'm in the Steermouse field where I can program each button individually. Then I click the one I want to program, COMMAND box is checked, input a shortcut key checked. Then I have to enter a combo: Until now I used: "COMMAND + Right Arrow" to go one page back but this only worked in Safari.

Which key combo do I have to press in Steermouse so that the "back-button" on my mouse lets me go back in Safari and in Finder?

I told you previously. Program the button to use Input Shortcut Key selected from the drop down menu. Check the box labeled for COMMAND key (⌘) and simply press the "[" or "]" keys. The first is to page back, the second is to page forward. In the text window you should see either "cmd+[" or "cmd+]". Click on the OK button. In the button display you should now see that button number will have the programmed command.

If you can't follow my instructions, then read the documentation that came with the software.
