Terminal-ssh

I have a question in regards to the (Terminal) program,
I have just purchased my macbook and I need to explain my line of work to reach my point
I am student that works on a Linux server for my graduate study, of course I access my server either through (ssh) or a program we use called (no machine-NX) which is basically a remote desktop.
I use windows OS and/or Linux OS’s to connect to my server. The most favorite Linux OS I use is Linux mandriva:
http://www.mandriva.com/
It has a really good graphical interface.
Now when I ssh with mandriva and connect to my server (and I have not seen this done with other Linux OS’s) I have the ability to open my server’s graphical interfaces within mandriva itself. For example (and not limited to) when you type gedit file_name a text editor is opened in mandriva. Also other graphical visualization programs open inside mandriva, and these programs are not installed in mandriva.
When I bought my new macbook, I tried to do the same thing, but I get an error (“Can’t open display”).
Now is there a way I can make this work in mac or that is not possible. By the way this feature is only exclusive to mandriva (I think, but I’m not sure) I have tried ubuntu and SUSE, and they do not have this ability.
If this ability does not exist in mac OS, I think this should be an interesting topic to point out to the software developers in apple.
Thanks for your time in reading this question.

Anything you can do in one Linux can be done in any other Linux. 99% of what you can do in Linux can be done on a Mac.

It sounds as if you are describing X windows. I do what you are describing every day on my Mac. You need an ssh config file with "ForwardX11 yes". You can also just type "ssh -X".

Still, I bet No Machine NX is better than X windows. Why not just use the Mac client?
