Repeated start up chime

A couple weeks ago, my mac began repeating the start up chime about four times after which it starts up normally. Worried this indicates a problem.

I am having the same problem. I get one normal chime, and then about 3 delayed, half/trailing chimes after that (a small pause between each). And it's only been going on for a few weeks.

I'm not sure if this is related or not, but, I also get a message about "updating the boot cache" every time I shutdown or restart as well, also beginning about the same time.

Have a look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8036361&#8036361

After monitoring this issue for more than a year, my solution is simple: When I have my Terratec Cynergy XS hybride DVB-T tuner- USB stick connected to one of the USB ports, I get two chimes on every startup. Independent from OS version etc.
Unplug it before starting up - one chime. No trouble, works every time.
To me this seems to be some bug in the firmware polling the usb-ports for devices on startup.
Or is it a feature? 😉
