Smooth gradients on the macbook pro lcd display !

I recently purchased a macbook pro with the new lcd screen, but I quickly discovered the lack of screen quality in displaying gradients.

I discovered the issue in illustrator, having problems getting my gradients smooth, but after doing some research on this subject it became clear to me that it was nor illustrator or photoshop doing dodgy(banded) gradients, but it was the lcd display on my macbook pro 15" that didn't display the gradients right.

Making sure colors where set to millions and the contrast setting where set to normal, I still saw these dodgy gradients, so I called up my local Apple support.
First of all he recomended that i double checked the above mentioned settings and reinstalled photoshop and illustrator, but after convincing him this was not the issue, he started to see the dodgy gradiens himself on his screen.

A good example of the bad gradients can be seen in the default icon of the coverflow. Here you should see a smooth circular gradient going from the top down going from white to black, but if you own a new macbook pro there is a good chance you don't see a smooth gradient.

So far my research haven't solved the problem so my theory is that it is either the software not performing smoothly, or even worse it is a hardware problem.

If it is software related i would recommend Apple to fix this as soon as possible, but if its hardware related I have a problem.

Is there any solution to this ?

Hi, Soren. I'm not seeing anything of the kind you describe, and I don't know what you mean by "the default icon of the coverflow." Can you post a link to a web page on which you see the problem clearly, or suggest a file that would be present on every MBP for others to look at?

Do you see faulty gradients in the standard Apple desktop images or screensavers that came preinstalled on your MBP?

Hi eww, thanks for the quick reply.

Here is an example of what i am talking about.

A gradient should fade from one color to the other, but what i see here is not a smooth transition. I see a transition with bands all the way through it.

This is not really a major problem in itunes or any other coverflow application, but when working in illustrator and photoshop it is quite frustrating not being able to see how the gradient will look on print or on other computers.

My fear is, that it is not just my computer that is showing these banded gradients, but that it is a problem for the new macbook pro line with the lcd screens. But hopefully this is not the case.

Ok, so my machine is coming tomorrow but I did some tests while waiting for a friend in the mac store today. I made a gradient in photoshop in the unibody 15" and the last gen 17". Oh my god the unibody 15" is soooo much better. The gradients had 'banding' on both, the the new ones are such an improvement on the 17s its crazy.

The funny thing is, i'm writting this on a 5 year old 12" powerbook and its much better than both of them! (better, as in, less banding in gradients)
