Q: mail sending 2 messages for every 1 sent ("sending 2 of 2 messages")

hi... did a search, but it was a tough one to search for.

an odd problem: mail says it's sending 2 messages for each message i send. for instance, i type a note to my mom (because i'm a good son) and hit send on the one email... the status bar at the bottom left of the panel says: "sending message: 2 of 2" or "outgoing messages: 2 of 2"...

however, in checking the sent folder, only 1 message sent.

it does not do this all of the time, but about 1 out of every 5 messages, it seems...

i'm worried about malware, spyware, etc... would there be such a thing? why is mail acting weird?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

There are no viruses for Mac OS X, and no malware can be installed without you providing your Admin password, so you don't have that, either.

This is normal behavior, because you have an IMAP email account. In order for everything to be in sync, the mail server and your Mac must communicate very frequently, and that includes whenever you send or receive email. The message may say one thing, but unless you see multiple, identical messages being sent or received, it's not happening. There's no such thing as invisible email.

The same thing happens to me (with POP accounts). I write and send an eMail (with attachments) and it says, in the Mail Activity window, "2 of 2 messages sent" when I have only sent one. This is not an IMAP sync issue. It does make one concerned that someone else is getting a copy... but, no doubt, it is an Apple Mail bug. We all know that would not be unusual :0]

I'm seeing the same thing for a POP account.

I was wondering if the second email is the one being moved to the 'Sent' mailbox?

Ditto... one message sent / mail activity shows 2 of 2 messages. POP account.

I have same problem. I think, that it depends how many e-mail boxes have your contact in apple address book. When i'm sending 1 e-mail to my friend with 3 e-mail boxes in address book it's sends 3 mails. Hmmm...

I do not have this problem. I get an accurate number in my Mail Activity window. and I send to people with multiple e-mail accounts defined in my addressbook. I have both IMAP and POP accounts that I send from. I have a friend that I am trying to help that does have the same problem as you all do -- sends 1 e-mail to ANYBODY and the window indicates sending message 2 of 2 EVERYTIME. I'd dearly love to know how to fix or correct this problem. Are any of you guys/gals synching with a MobileMe account? I do not.

Same thing happens on my laptops, in fact found this thread trying to find out what is going on.

Sounds like it's a known bug until the Apple marketing dept hears of it and starts calling it a '2-4-1 BONUS'.

Im not sure if this is what is happening to you guys, but Im aware of this issue when I have both my MacBook running and my MacPro running at the same time. I think it has something to do with the the way I have my rules set up (almost like an echoing effect), but I event pinpointed it exactly yet.

Not using MobileMe... happening for me on POP accounts only (they only kind I have set up).

What I think I did notice is that if the message has more than one recipient, it displays the correlating number. For example, I had an email to one party, CCing another. Outgoing mail showed "1 of 2..." When I sent to a sole recipient, it says "1 of 1"... could it be as simple as that, the latter number relative to the number of recipients?

Not sure why this thread is marked solved. I don't see any answers here. I have the same issue. One pop account. I am using Mobile Me, but I don't sync this pop account, and see others who aren't using Mobile Me have the same issue.
