I hear an echo on phone calls

I don't make a lot of phone calls (once a day?) on my phone, but lately, when I do, my voice had a bad echo on it. If I hang up and call back, the echo is gone. This is a bit annoying since I have to hang up and call back most of the time. It doesn't seem to happen when someone calls me, but I could be wrong. I have AT&T service. I assume this is an AT&T problem, but I thought I would post just to see if anyone else is experiencing this problem.

The echo is only for my voice, not the person I am talking to.

Thanks.

Since upgrading to 3G on 1/9/09, I have also heard my own echo on two occasions. The other party was also using a new 3G but did not hear any echo. I was using earphones (either Apple's or the new ZAGG earbuds), and the other person was not using any accessories. There were no echos with my 2G. An earlier post (last week?) mentioned echos as well. I have not tried hanging up and redialing since the echos were brief. BTW, they were also loud.

I am having the same problem with my 3G and it's getting much worse. Now I am having an issue where I can't hear people calling me, but they can hear me talking. All I hear is myself - not an echo, but a 2 second delayed repeat of everything I say.

I'm trying to figure out if it's the phone or AT&T. I'm not sure, but the issue may be mainly in one area suggesting a problem with the cell tower not the phone.

Kay is right. If you are on a GSM phone/network all GSM phones require an equalizer as part of the communications. My first iPhone 3G the caller heard the echo and it was perfect for me. a trip to the apple store and the rep called my phone and heard the echo, replaced phone on the spot. new HW has no issue. It may be generically known as a noise canceling circuit but its a part of all GSM phones. If its an all the time thing for you i suggest going to an apple store to have a genius look at it for replacement. if it comes and goes, i would ensure you have upgraded to 2.2.1 firmware and that its not being caused by the persons phone you are calling. calling a landline is a good way to eliminate the other end being an issue.

I also get the echos often, and most of those calls are to my wife on her iPhone. In addition, I seem to have way too many dropped calls. In metro Atlanta, I sometimes have to call back 3-4 times to complete my business. This seems to have become worse since updating to 2.2.1. Any ideas?
Other than the phone part, the iPhone is amazing.

Thanks,

Louie
