Quicktime "Could not open movie" "An I/O Error occured"

I get this message (that the "Movie could not be opened" that "an I/O error occurred") when I attempt to open wmv, mpg or others with Quicktime. And yet they DO OPEN with VLC or other programs!!!

I got this when I started to copy files from my existing external drive to a new USB drive. They dont open on the new drive, and the files that opened yesterday on the old drive now dont open either (but ok with VLC).

Wierd.

PowerBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

You need to install:

Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)

Perian from http://perian.org/

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.

Did you properly format the new drive (Disk Utility) before moving the files?

Thanks for the responses. I actually put my system to sleep overnight, and when I woke it this morning all of the files opened in Quicktime normally. That was strange.
