Macbook Air doesnt recognize extern Superdrive anymore

Hi,

I`m using my Macbook Air with an extern superdrive since February last year when it was just published. Two weeks ago suddenly the superdrive wasnt recognized by the MBA anymore so I couldnt read / write any CD/DVD anymore. I contacted the support and Apple sent me a brandnew Drive. Surprisingly this new drive shows the exact same problems like the other one. I cant use the drive at all. The USB-Port works fine when I connect a extern HDD or printer.

Can you tell me what might caused this issue and what I can do now to solve it?

Thanks for your help!

There's very little to do when it comes to troubleshooting USB connections, especially when you have only one USB port. You can try resetting the SMC and see if anything changes. Also, under System Profiler, when the drive is plugged in does the bus even recognize it? If the hardware profiler is not detecting the drive then there's the presumption that there's something wrong with the machine, especially with a 2nd Super Drive.

The next would be to consider arranging hardware service.

Hi guys, ok finally found the solution for those that still need it:

download the 10.5.6 combo update from:

http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OSX/downloads/061-5539.20081211.Aswe3/MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg

INstall reboot and should work fine! i think some people trying to enter DFU on the iphones may have encountered this issue

I tried this update and no dice for me. (I'd already updated, so this was a reinstall, if that makes a difference.)

Looking in the log files shows 'IOUSBFamily failed to enumerate the device', or something very similar, when I pug the drive in. In fact it succeeded in recognising the superdrive once - sort of. It appeared in the USB device list... but not as a DVD burner. Inserting a disk failed to provoke any response. Unplugged, replugged - not discovered again.

This is driving me nuts. Is it a dead drive? I've heard these are a bit temperamental...

In other news, the remote disc functionality seems to have sopped working too. Sigh.

I also had this problem when I bought the SuperDrive. I took the MBA and SuperDrive to an Apple Store. They said it was some problem with a software update, maybe the 10.5.6 mentioned above. Whatever they did it was working fine but I tried to use my SuperDrive again today and nothing. I checked System Profiler and SuperDrive appears under USB device tree but when I try to insert a CD it won't take it. Any ideas???
